The Halliwells HR Club is a forum for HR professionals to meet on a regular basis in a relaxed environment to share knowledge and learn about topical issues that have direct impact on work and managing people.

On 14 March the Government published the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (Amendment) Regulations 2008. Less than two weeks later and the Regulations came into force giving little time for employers to adapt to the significant changes.

Some of the provisions have had an immediate impact as it was made easier for pregnant employees to bring discrimination claims and sexual harassment laws were extended to cover the actions of a third party. However other key changes relating to benefits and bonuses are due to be implemented for employees on maternity leave who are expecting babies on or after 5 October this year.

In the next HR Club we will use a case study exercise to identify and assess the key steps needed to comply with the new obligations relating to employees on maternity leave and to guard against claims from employees who are in direct contact with the public.
